Spider House Click to hear in real audio

In a dream of fire
The spider holds her place on the wall

Though the house is burning.
Flames rumble up out of the dark basement

Like men trying to flee a sinking ship,
Each arm of fire like a sprung coil

Jerking in the blue, waving air.
Shadows leap on the wall in tongues

Of torn paper, fish-heads in the talons of eagles,
The beaks of innumerable birds quickly turning

In their rivets.
The spider sees another wall inside the fire

That towers out of the flames like a curtain of trees;
She stays standing at the threshold of its face,

Where forest meets fire, looking past the bright,
Crazy flowers that whip out of the void.
