Dramatic Monologue: "Why Men Carve Figureheads on the Bows of Ships"


BOB MAYBERRY teaches playwriting and composition at Grand Valley State University. He is cofounder of Attention Deficit Drama, an experimental theatre group dedicated to shorter and shorter plays. Recent productions include A Million Monologues for the Millennium and Kneeling for the Butcher: 3 authors, 2 actors, 1 title.

Bob's latest play, A Single Numberless Death, adapts Nora Strejilevich's memoir about being tortured by the Argentine junta in the 1970s. It will be produced this fall at GVSU. Bob's previous plays include "Disappearing in Nepal," winner of the White Bird Award for best environmental play of 1999, and "The Catechism of Patty Reed" published in the anthology Lucky 13: Short Plays. The monologue included here, "Why men carve figureheads on the bows of ships," is excerpted from his play, "Cristofina Sets Sail for the New World."
